In this tutorial we will show you how to install and configure Docker on Debian 8 Jessie server. For those of you who didn’t know, Docker is an open-source project that automates the deployment of the application inside the software container. The container allows the developer to package up all project resources such as libraries, dependencies, assets etc. Docker is written in a Go Programming language and is developed by Dotcloud. It is basically a container engine which uses the Linux Kernel features like namespaces and control groups to create containers on top of an operating system and automates the application deployment on the container.
This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of Linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple and assumes you are running in the root account, if not you may need to add ‘sudo’ to the commands to get root privileges. I will show you through the step by step installation Docker latest version on a Debian 8 (Jessie) server.
Install Docker on Debian 8 Jessie
Step 1. Before we install any software, it’s important to make sure your system is up to date by running these following apt-get commands in the terminal:
Step 2. Installing Docker.
First, Add docker repository to your Debian Jessie machine with the command:
sudo echo "deb https://apt.dockerproject.org/repo debian-jessie main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.list
Update the APT package index using aptitude or apt-get utility then install docker latest version engine:
apt-get install docker-engine
Once that is done, start and enable docker to run on boot up:
systemctl start docker
systemctl enable docker
Verify Docker installation:
### docker --version
Docker version 1.11.0, build 4dc5990
Step 3. Deploying your First Docker Image, “Hello World!”.
To be sure that we successfully installed Docker, we can start the all time classic “hello-world” image:
docker run hello-world
If you see this message, then it’s working correctly:
Hello from Docker.
This message shows that your installation appears to be working correctly.
Congratulation’s! You have successfully installed Docker. Thanks for using this tutorial for installing Docker on Debian 8 Jessie server. For additional help or useful information, we recommend you to check the official Docker web site.
