For those of you who didn’t know, Zenoss is a free and open source monitoring solution similar to Nagios. Zenoss Core provides a web interface that allows system administrators to monitor availability, inventory/configuration, performance, and other events. The main advantage of zenoss is that you don’t need to install any software on the client side for monitoring.

This article assumes you have at least basic knowledge of linux, know how to use the shell, and most importantly, you host your site on your own VPS. The installation is quite simple. I will show you through the step by step installation zenoss on centos 6.

Install Zenoss on CentOS 6

Step 1. First, Install Java and make sure JAVA_HOME is set appropriately.

Download the latest Oracle Sun Java RPM from Java Downloads and transfer it to your server.

Check and verify Java version:

Step 2. Disable SELinux.

Disable enforcing mode permanently by editing the /etc/selinux/config.

Step 3. Install the Zenoss Dependencies Repository.

This RPM installs Zenoss Dependency Repository. It will help us resolve all of the dependencies required to install and run Zenoss.

Step 4. Install Latest MySQL Server.

We can install MySQL Community Server and Zenoss Core on the same host or  we can install them on separate hosts. In my case I am using the Same Host. Do Not set the mysql root password.

Install the packages with the command:

Make sure to set the following parameters in your /etc/my.cnf file after the MySQL installation.

Start mysql daemon and to configure it to start automatically on reboot:

Configure Mysql for Zenoss Core installation, Do not add a space between the single quotes in the following commands:

Step 5. Install Zenoss using YUM.

Now Start the following Services:

Important: When you install zenoss core rpm as shown in the above step, you might get lot of missing dependencies messages. You have to install all of those missing packages one by one.

Step 5. Access Zenoss via web browser.

Congratulation’s! You have successfully installed zenoss. Thanks for using this tutorial for installting zenoss on centos 6 systems. For additional help or useful information, we recommend you to check the official zenoss web site.
